We're recruiting on call firefighters

Applications will soon be opening for On-Call firefighters at several stations across County Durham and Darlington.

Whether you are looking for a new challenge or wanting to give something back to your community, the role of an On-Call firefighter could be for you!

On-call firefighters are a vital part of today’s Fire and Rescue Service. They provide emergency cover to more than 90% of the UK. In County Durham and Darlington, they make up approximately 53% of the operational workforce. County Durham and Darlington is served by a total of 15 fire stations, 13 of which include On-call firefighters.

When they are called to an emergency, they could be dealing with any type of major or minor incident, such as road, rail or air collisions, fires, floods, chemical spills and rescuing people trapped in lifts or other confined spaces.

Firefighters also take part in activities such as giving talks to schools, visiting community groups, fitting smoke alarms in homes and advising homeowners on protecting their properties from fire risks.

Jonathan Robinson, on call liaison Officer, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone who is looking for a rewarding job where they can give something back to their community.

“On-Call firefighters have a vital part to play in County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service. Many On-Call firefighters have full-time jobs; others may be self-employed or stay at home parents.”

“Being an On-Call firefighter, you will work alongside our Wholetime firefighters, but you will not work full-time. On-Call firefighters are paid to spend some periods of time available on-call to respond to emergency incidents. This does mean you must live or work within five minutes of an On-Call station.

The recruitment website for applications for On-Call firefighter vacancies will be open from the 1st of March until the 22nd of March. Keep your eyes peeled!
