Safer Electricals

Did you know? Unsafe electrical products, especially bought online can cause fires. E-bikes, e-scooters, and lithium-ion batteries are increasingly linked to home fires due to risky charging practices and damage.

Keep safe and follow our top tips on general electrical safety:

  • A simple rule is one plug = one socket.
  • Avoid charging devices on beds or sofas. These retain heat and this can lead to a fire starting.
  • Check cords and appliances for wear and tear or damage - if this occurs then either replace or get repaired by a qualified person.
  • Always check and follow manufacturer's instructions when using electronic devices.
  • Use your washer and tumble dryer when you are at home and awake. Empty filters on your tumble dryer after each use.
  • If using electric blankets make sure they are in a good condition, not folded when stored and replaces at least every 10 years. Keep a regular check for faults and if a fault appears, replace immediately.
  • Dispose of all batteries via approved battery recycling points. Never put batteries into general waste bins.
