Oxygen use
Oxygen is not flammable , but it makes fires burn faster and hotter. Even a small spark can cause serious danger in an oxygen-enriched environment.
Key risks at home:
- Smoking near oxygen is extremely dangerous. Never smoke or allow others to smoke in the same room as oxygen equipment.
- Open flames (candles, gas hobs, matches) should be kept well away from oxygen tanks, tubing and users.
- Electrical items like hairdryers, electric blankets, or heaters can spark - use with caution and keep them away from oxygen flow.
- Oxygen leaks can build up in enclosed spaces (e.g. under blankets or in poorly ventilated rooms), increasing fire risk.
- Be aware that clothes, furniture and other items in the area oxygen is used will become oxygen enriched and will burn quickly if exposed to fire.
Safety tips:
- Post "no smoking" signs in rooms where oxygen is used.
- Ensure good ventilation in rooms where oxygen is used.
- Turn off oxygen when not in use (if safe and advised by your healthcare provider).
- If available, have fire extinguishing equipment nearby such as a fire blanket or extinguisher.
- Fit a smoke alarm in the room where oxygen is used and test it weekly.
- Store oxygen cylinders upright, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
