Celebrations and Candles

Did you know? Almost 3 accidental house fires a day are caused by candles

Candle Safety

  • Keep candles away from anything that can burn—like curtains, decorations, or furniture.
  • Use sturdy holders that won’t tip over easily.
  • Never leave candles unattended—blow them out if you leave the room.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Place candles on heat-resistant surfaces, away from edges.

Firework Safety

  • Attend professionally organised displays wherever possible
  • Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open space.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Keep spectators at a safe distance.
  • Never relight a failed firework.
  • Dispose of used fireworks safely—soak them in water before disposing of them.
  • Store fireworks securely and away from heat sources.
  • Purchase fireworks from reputable retailers. Ensure packaging has the UKCA or CE mark.

Celebrating Safety – Christmas and other celebrations

  • Check fairy lights for damage before use—don’t overload sockets.
  • Turn off lights before bed or leaving the house.
  • Keep real Christmas trees watered—dry trees catch fire easily.
  • Don’t place decorations near heat sources or open flames.
  • Avoid using candles near other decorations.

Alcohol and Fire Safety

  • Be extra careful when drinking near open flames like candles, fire pits, or BBQs—alcohol can affect judgment and coordination.
  • Don’t cook if you’re under the influence of alcohol—it’s easy to get distracted or fall asleep, which increases fire risk.
  • Avoid smoking when drinking, especially indoors or near flammable materials.
  • Keep an eye on guests—make sure no one accidentally knocks over candles or leaves cooking unattended.
  • Plan ahead—if you’re hosting, set up safe zones for candles and cooking, and make sure smoke alarms are working.
