Take your first steps towards becoming a firefighter with new course

County Durham and Darlington Fire Service has teamed up with New College Durham to offer a brand-new course to help people prepare for a career in the fire service.

The 13-week programme is open to those aged 19 plus and will see participants gain a Level 2 qualification in Safeguarding and Prevention and take their first steps towards becoming a firefighter

You could qualify for a guaranteed interview during any future recruitment process if you successfully complete the programme and pass the fire service recruitment process which includes registration, online assessments and a fitness test.

Key dates
•    Information session: Thursday, October 23, 2025.
•    Programme start date: Thursday, November 6, 2025.
•    Duration: 13 weeks.  (Thursday evenings from 6pm to 9pm.)

 

Venues
•    New College Durham – Framwellgate Moor campus, Durham, DH1 5ES.
•    County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service Training Centre, Bowburn South Industrial Estate, Bowburn, DH6 5AD. 
•    Fire stations across County Durham.

What the programme involves
•    Fitness training and mock recruitment assessments
•    Safeguarding and prevention training (accredited)
•    Support with the fire service’s online recruitment process
•    Employability skills including applications, interviews, communication, and teamwork
•    Wellbeing and resilience development
