Firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) are set to take part in the Tunnel to Towers run in New York in memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
The annual 5K run and walk organized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, retraces the final steps of New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighter Stephen Siller who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, where he gave up his life to save others.
The run is now marking the 25th anniversary and is set to take place on Sunday, September 27.
While the event aims to raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in America, the CDDFRS team will be raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity.
The charity provides care and wellbeing support to members of the UK's fire services and their families.
High Handenhold Watch Manager Jamie Smith said: "For many of us, this is far more than a journey or a challenge.
"It is an opportunity to honour the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of the first responders and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
"Running and walking the same route taken by Firefighter Stephen Siller is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary acts of service carried out in the face of unimaginable adversity.
"Some members of our team have proudly participated each year since 2013, returning because the experience leaves a lasting impact, whilst some members will be taking part for the first time.
"In 2026, our largest group yet, with 26 colleagues from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS), London Fire Brigade (LFB), East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the NHS and Durham Constabulary standing together in New York.
"We will run and walk not only in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also in recognition of the enduring bond shared by the global firefighting community.
"Regardless of the badge we wear or the service we represent, we are united by the same values: courage, commitment, and service to others.
"As we take part in this special 25th anniversary event, we do so with humility, respect, and gratitude - ensuring that the legacy of those we honour is never forgotten, and that future generations continue to understand the true meaning of sacrifice and service."
