A man has sadly died following a house fire in Ferryhill.

At 8.42pm on Tuesday (October 28), County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) control room was alerted to a fire within a property in the Davy Street area.

Two fire engines from Spennymoor and a third from Bishop Auckland attended, with the first crew on the scene within eight minutes.

Upon initial investigations, crew confirmed the fire had already gone out.

Sadly, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

CDDFRS fire investigators are working with Durham Constabulary to determine the cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious.

Dan Wootton, Group Manager at CDDFRS, said: “Our hearts go out to the family of the man involved in this devastating incident.

“Tragedies like this are a stark reminder of how dangerous fire can be—and that it can take lives.

“Keeping our communities safe is our top priority. That’s why we’re urging every household to check that they have working smoke alarms.

“Please test your alarms weekly, and if you don’t have one, reach out to us. Our firefighters are happy to install them for free through our Home Fire Safety Visits.

“We also encourage everyone to check in on their neighbours—especially those who are elderly or live alone. Offer to test their alarms or help them arrange a safety visit with their local fire crew.”

Firefighters from Spennymoor will be working in the area to offer reassurance to residents and provide home fire safety advice.

To arrange a free Home Fire Safety Visit, including the testing and fitting of smoke alarms, please call 0345 223 4221 or visit the CDDFRS website.
