Firefighters are warning families not to let their Halloween become a real-life horror story by making one important check.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue (CDDFRS) is urging those set to wear a Halloween costume are to look for the CE or UKCA mark on the label, which means they have been fire safety tested.

On-call firefighter Cinnamon Filipiak, who is based at Barnard Castle Fire Station, said: “Halloween is supposed to be scary, but there are some horrors that you will want to avoid.

“Many fancy-dress costumes are highly flammable because they can be classed as toys, which means they are less fire resistant than normal clothes.

“We’re urging people to check their costume’s label for a UKCA or CE mark, which means that they have been fire safety tested.

“Remember, if your costume does catch fire, remember to stop, drop and roll.

“And if you’re decorating the house with pumpkins, please use battery powered or LED candles in their pumpkins instead of candles.

“They will still look spooky but are a safe way to protect your loved ones from fire.

“Stay safe and have a Happy Halloween!”
