Watch Manager March, Crew Manager Shane-Stone and Firefighters Scott and Ringer were all presented with their certificates by Chief Fire Officer Stuart Errington at Consett Fire Station earlier this week. 👩🚒
On the 21st of December 2021, the crew were mobilised to a smoke alarm sounding at Boltons Bungalows in Chopwell. 🚒 On arrival, Watch Manager March approached the property and tried the front door, however it was locked. He then proceeded to open the letter box and found that the property was filled with heavy smoke.
Forced entry was used to gain access to the property where a fire could be seen within the front room. Crew Manager Shane-Stone and Firefighter Scott began rapid deployment to extinguish the fire and search for possible missing persons within the bungalow.
Due to the severity of the smoke in the house, Firefighter Ringer radioed Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) for further assistance. At this stage Crew Manager Shane-Stone and Firefighter Scott had extinguished the fire and they were able to rescue an elderly male from the building.
Two firefighters from TWFRS assessed the casualty’s condition and after some oxygen therapy he was displaying positive readings. Once the ambulance arrived, a full handover was given on the causalities condition. Watch Manager March explained that the casualty had been exposed to smoke inhalation and suspected he may have possible burns to his airway.
Thankfully the causality was in hospital for only a short time with smoke inhalation issues and he has made a full recovery.
Chief Fire Officer Stuart Errington awarded the heroic crew commenting “There is no doubt their professionalism, decision making, and exemplary teamwork meant that they were able to save someone’s life, I am immensely proud of them all, well done.”
