As Bonfire Night approaches, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service are joining forces with their partners to encourage members of the public to attend an organised firework display and giving out tips to stay safe in the lead up to the 5th November. CDDFRS have are launching the #BetterBonfire campaign on social media in partnership with Durham County Council, Darlington Borough Council and Durham Constabulary to ensure the public are aware of the dangers of bonfires and fireworks which includes the firework code, safe use of sparklers and keeping your furry friends safe indoors.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service's (CDDFRS) Station Manager Craig Jewkes was honoured to be part of the procession at Her Majesty’s funeral last Monday (19th of September.)  Craig was one of just 16 firefighters from across the UK selected to take part in the state funeral last week. 

A brand-new centre to train offshore workers in emergency firefighting is being developed in County Durham thanks to an agreement between the UK’s leading energy trainer, AIS Survivex and Vital Fire Solutions (VFS), the trading arm of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS).  This exciting joint venture will see a new 20,000 square foot offshore emergency fire training facility being built at the existing fire service Training Centre at Bowburn, incorporating a three-storey mock offshore platform rig with full size heli-deck, helicopter simulator and internal structures to mirror those on an offshore installation.

County Durham parents are being urged to highlight the dangers of setting deliberate fires after new figures show an increase in incidents. According to official data from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) crews attended 895 suspected deliberate fires, with almost a third of the total incidents service wide in Peterlee, Easington and Seaham between April 2021 and March 2022. That is an increase of 37% compared to the previous year.

Robbie Franklin, 22, is lucky to be alive after a road traffic collision in May this year left him with extensive injuries, including broken legs, broken fingers, and a head injury. Robbie, who is now on the road to recovery, contacted the fire crews who rescued him and asked if he could visit Spennymoor Fire Station to meet the firefighters who helped to saved his life.

CDDFRS warns that fires could ignite and spread easily across open grass land in hot temperatures.  The weather warning, issued by the Met Office is for temperatures in excess of 28 degrees on Sunday and into next week. The service would like to ask the public to think twice before doing anything which involves a naked flame.
