For Watch Manager Mick Corfield, there is no greater job in the world than being a Firefighter.

Growing up he dreamed of being a motor mechanic and at 16 started a job with Bests Garage in Hordon.

From there he took up a role as a tyre fitter working in Hartlepool, before moving on to ARTIX, which is now known as Caterpillar, where he constructed articulated vehicles.

But aged 29, he felt drawn to a new profession and applied to be a Firefighter with CDDFRS.

And 20 years later, he has never looked back.

Since joining in 2004, he’s worked his way up to become a Watch Manager and he’s spent the last decade inspiring and encouraging the next generation of Firefighters through his role as an Associate Trainer, specialising in instructing on the correct use of Breathing Apparatus and Working at Height techniques.

Passionate about this role, he said: “I think that being a firefighter is the greatest profession there is.

“This is a rewarding, fulfilling, and exciting line of work which also offers fantastic conditions and promotional opportunities.

“At the end of the day, we are aware that we have impacted other people's lives.

"The most fulfilling aspect of our work is knowing that we have contributed to people's safety and have aided those in need.”

While being a Firefighter wasn’t his childhood dream, it was his son Matthew’s. Inspired by his dad, the 19-year-old is an Apprentice Firefighter with CDDFRS.

When not at work, Mick enjoys spending time with his wife of 25-years and his sons, Michael and Matthew, going to the gym, playing golf, or kayaking.

Feel inspired? CDDFRS is recruiting Wholetime Firefighters. To apply before the deadline of April 12 at 11.59pm, visit https://bit.ly/48VKuwy
