A North East fire service named the best in the UK has helped a group of young people take their first steps on the ladder to a career as a firefighter.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) has launched a new course in partnership with New College Durham to help students prepare for a job in the fire service.
The 13-week programme called Fire Futures – Preparation Pathway saw participants undergo fitness training, mock recruitment assessments, and practice interview skills.
The 14 students also gained a Level 2 qualification in Safeguarding and Prevention along with a valuable insight into a fire service career.
The course was open to students aged 19 plus and took place at Durham and Bishop Auckland Fire Stations as well as New College Durham’s Framwellgate Moor campus.
Students marked the completion of the new course with a passing out ceremony in front of friends and family last month.
Now CDDFRS, which was named UK Fire and Rescue Service of the Year at the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards, is set to welcome a second cohort of students on the Fire Futures course with New College Durham later this year.
CDDFRS Group Manager Jon Singelton, said: “Fire Futures has been about much more than introducing people to the fire service – it’s about building confidence, capability and understanding of the responsibilities that come with the role of a modern firefighter.
“All 14 participants have shown real dedication and motivation throughout the programme, and gaining a Level 2 Safeguarding and Prevention qualification is a significant achievement that is directly relevant to the work our firefighters do every day.
“The programme has helped participants understand our recruitment standards, fitness requirements, and the importance of Safeguarding and Prevent principles, while also developing the employability skills needed to succeed.
“We’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved and the commitment they’ve shown to their future careers.”
Lisa Waller, Director of Business Development, Sales and Growth from New College Durham, said: “We are incredibly proud of our first group of learners who have shown real commitment, resilience, and determination throughout the programme.
“Our partnership with CDDFRS provides a clear and supportive pathway into a highly respected public service career, and the success of this initial cohort demonstrates just how valuable this opportunity is.”
