Youngsters at a Stanley school were put through their paces by Firefighters to see if they had what it takes to become a Fire Cadet.

Crews visited North Durham Academy on Monday, April 22 to take part in a Joint Cadet Forces Day.

The event, organised by Stanley Area Action Partnership (AAP), saw CDDFRS team up with Durham Constabulary,  Royal Air Force Air Cadets, and the Army Cadets to lead around 250 Year 8 pupils in hands-on activities.

The day gave students the chance to explore a fire engine, search for a dummy in a smoke house and take part in drills with fire hoses.

Crews then carried out road traffic collision demonstration in front of the year group which saw them use their skills to cut up a car and rescue two passengers inside.

Dan Hodgson, District Manager of Emergency Response, North Division, said the event aimed to teach pupils about the cadet opportunities available in the area for young people and future career possibilities in the emergency services.

“We came together with police cadets, Army cadets, and RAF cadets for a joint Cadet Forces Day at North Durham Academy on Monday,” he said.

“The aim of the day was to reduce anti-social behaviour by encouraging youngsters to become a cadet to use their time more productively and learn life skills.

“This will help them with employability when they leave school.”

North Durham Academy pupils enjoyed the day and thanked the Service for attending.

A school spokesperson said: “Our Year 8's had a fantastic day today in school [on Monday].

“Students enjoyed learning about different cadet forces that they can join in our area.

“Thank you to each force that joined us at North Durham Academy and allowing our students to enjoy some hands-on experience.”
