It’s a job like no other.

For the first time in five years, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) are recruiting for full time firefighters.

Chief Fire Officer Steve Helps said: “For many, being a firefighter is a childhood dream, a lifelong ambition.

“For others, like me, it’s a path you hadn’t considered at all until you come to a crossroads and then suddenly, it’s the only job you could ever consider doing.

“No matter which category you fall under, there’s no denying that being a firefighter is a job like no other, a job where you’re given daily opportunities to make your community a safer place to live.

“But I’d never call it an easy career. People often ask what it takes to be a firefighter and I’d say it takes dedication, commitment and personal resilience, which will help you learn new skills to protect the communities we service, whilst keeping you and your colleagues safe.”

He added: “People also commonly ask for advice or top tips to assist with the recruitment process, and we’ve asked some of our firefighters to share their advice with the firefighters of tomorrow.”
