In October 2014, the Department of Communities and Local Government announced the winning bids for the £75 million Fire Transformation Fund, which had been announced in March 2014. In total, 37 projects from across the UK received funding with CDDFRS receiving £3.78 million to build what is believed to be the first ‘Quad Station’ in the country. The project will co-locate staff from CDDFRS, Durham Police, North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (TWSMRT) into new shared facilities in Barnard Castle. A secondary TWSMRT base will also be incorporated into a new shared station currently under construction in Durham City.
The quad station has now been completed and all four emergency services are occupying the site.
