From Ian Dockerty the Fire Service District Manager for Derwentside and Chair of the Derwentside Community Safety Partnership
The opening of the new Community Safety Centre at Consett Fire Station on Wednesday 25 June 2008 will officially commence at 11.00am. There will be a short address and opening ceremony conducted by the Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority Councillor Charles Magee, followed by a tour of the centre and a light buffet.
Guests will include Contractors, the design team, Combined Fire Authority Members, Fire Service personnel and Partners from Police, District Council, Primary Care Trust, Durham County Council and other agencies.
How we are here:
- Ian Dockerty and Peter Hewitson, their Team and Crews put together a business case to convert Consett Fire Station into a Community Fire Station and this was agreed by the Combined Fire Authority and Fire Service Senior Leadership Team.
- As a responsible Authority within the CDRP and because of our Strategic Priorities it was recognised that by extending the station and making it into a Community Safety Centre, we would have a facility to support making a difference in Derwentside.
What we have:
- A 2 storey building with disabled access, on the first floor we have 2 community safety rooms which can be changed to suit most requirements and they will be used for meetings, seminars and training sessions, with a maximum capacity for 60 people.
- On the ground floor we have Community Safety Office and brand new gym for our staff.
- The Derwentside Young Firefighters Association (YFA) have now moved into the small garage which was the gym and staff have converted this facility into an excellent YFA centre.
What we have planned for the future:
- Obviously the Centre will be available for our partners and agencies to use to tackle Strategic Priorities and Community Safety initiatives in Derwentside.
- The rooms are already booked for a number of meetings and in the future local community groups will be encouraged to use the centre.
- There will also be an opportunity to generate some income from the centre, which the District Team would use for initiatives and to support the basic upkeep.
- The Derwentside Community Safety Carousel will be run from the centre in September.
- The Young Firefighters Association now have a dedicated centre and the District Team and Youth Inclusion Team will be running Diversionary Schemes from the centre.
- As a District I know that a lot has been achieved through close partnership working and I am sure that this facility will be a great asset to us all.

For Information
The purpose of Refugee Week is to deliver positive educational messages that counter fear, ignorance and negative stereotypes of refugees, through arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary.
Refugee Week was first held in 1998, and was created in response to the increasingly negative perceptions of refugees and asylum seekers held by the general public in Britain. It remains the only UK-wide event that promotes the importance of sanctuary and the benefits it can bring to both refugees and host communities. | | |

Smoke Alarm Saves Family of 7
A County Durham family of 7 owe their lives to the simple activation of a smoke alarm following a severe fire in their home last night.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service responded to a call indicating that there were people trapped in the house on fire last night in Bowburn. The family were alerted to the fire by the activation of their smoke alarm whilst younger members of the family were asleep upstairs.
Fire broke out in the property at 5 Bede Terrace, Bowburn just before 23.00hours. The call to the Fire Service was made by the owner of the property who had been alerted by the alarm but was initially trapped inside the house with the other 6 members of her family. Control staff from the Service provided vital fire survival advice to the residents and provided support over the telephone whilst collecting all the required information for the fire crews.
Three crews from Durham Station attended the fire and on arrival discovered that all the family members had managed to evacuate because of the activation of the smoke alarm. First aid and oxygen were given at the scene to the family who were then transferred by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham for further treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
The crews had the fire under control within 20 minutes of arriving at the scene however the property was extensively damaged. The investigation into the fire has begun but at present the cause has not been determined.
Today as part of the Fire Services response to incidents of this nature the crews from Durham Station and members of the Community Safety Team were working in the neighbourhoods around the incident offering to provide free home safety advice and the fitting of free smoke alarms to all residents.
Paul Reay, Director of Community Safety, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service stated “It is always very worrying we when respond to a call of trapped people within buildings. The importance of fitting smoke alarms in your homes was clearly highlighted by the fire last night. Without the smoke alarms the outcome would have been very different and I am certain the alarms saved the lives or prevented serious injury on this occasion”.
Paul continued “I would urge all residents to take the opportunity to have smoke alarms fitted for free by the Service and to receive our potentially life saving Home Fire Safety Advice to help us achieve our vision of Safer People, Safer Places”.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service provides free home fire safety checks with free smoke alarm installation please call 0191 3324222 or visit www.ddfire.gov.uk to find out more.
