County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service aim to ensure that all staff, visitors and customers are treated with equal respect in an environment free from prejudice and harassment. In all aspects of service delivery and employment no individual or group will be discriminated against on the grounds of gender, marital status, age, disability, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, religious belief, sexual orientation, trade unions activity, family responsibilities or unrelated criminal convictions.

We also value diversity and will achieve this through the organisations roles of

§ Employer
§ Provider of services
§ Purchaser of services
§ Working with partner agencies

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service aims to

· To promote the principles of diversity
· To increase staff and customer awareness of the Service values
· To encourage diversity in the recruitment and selection process

Our Corporate Equality Plan provides a framework setting out how County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service will promote the equalities agenda.

Equality Schemes

The legislative requirements of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, Disability Discrimination (Amendment) Act 2005 and Equality Act 2006 place a duty on public authorities to identify and tackle discrimination, to prevent harassment, and to ensure that their work promotes equality of opportunity in respect of Race, Disability and Gender

The Equality Schemes have been drawn up in accordance with the legislative requirements and underpin our aim to promote equality, protect against discrimination and to ensure equality throughout our workforce whilst also contributing to the wider community agenda.

The Schemes include an action plan that will be monitored on an annual basis to ensure that we make the best possible use of every opportunity to drive forward equality throughout our Service and the wider community we serve.

As with all of our Equality schemes the consultation process is ongoing.

The Authority’s Equality Schemes set out how we will put this commitment into practice:

Equality Impact Assessments

We are committed to mainstreaming equality and diversity in all that we do. Part of the legal requirements with which we need to comply is the Race, Disability and Gender Equality duties. These duties require all puiblic services to consult with employees and stakeholders, to promote equality and eliminate discrimination.

An essential element of the Equality duties is the requirement to undertake Equality Impact Assessments (EIA's) on everything we do. This involves screening all our policies and procedures for anything that may inadvertently discriminate against any group or groups of people. The process is carried out by systematically analysing a proposed or existing policy, service, practice or procedure to identify what effect or likely effect will follow from its implementation for different groups in the community. The aim is to ensure any negative consequences are eliminated or minimised and opportunities for promoting equality are on legislation in relation.
