Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is the process of deciding the magnitude of risks identified in an organisation. Official definitions include:

'Identifying the hazards present in any undertaking and then evaluating the extent of the risks involved, taking into account whatever precautions are already being taken' (from the Approved Code of Practice to the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999).

We assess the significant risks within our organisation.

There are risk assessments on the following:

  • Training;
  • Operations;
  • Activities;
  • Control;
  • Equipment;
  • Manual Handling; and
  • Premises.

At an incident it is not possible for firefighters to conduct a formal and written down risk assessment. As such a process called "dynamic risk assessment" is used. This process uses the philosophy of:

  • Firefighters will take some risk to save saveable lives;
  • Firefighters will take little risk to save saveable property; and
  • Firefighters will not take any risk at all to save life or property that are already lost.
