History and Background
Spennymoor lies on the A167 equidistant between Durham City and Bishop Auckland and developed from being a coaching stop on the old A1 into the medium sized market town of today.

The town’s population remained static for many years but, due to the growth of the electrical appliance industries of Thorn, Electrolux and Black and Decker, and the service industries associated with them, Spennymoor experienced a mini boom in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and local housing developments grew.

The Fire Station built in 1957 was demolished in 1970 to make way for town centre re-development and a new Station was built at Bessemer Park. This was later upgraded to two pumps in 1974 with the building of a second bay.
