Communications

Main Scheme Radio Communications

We have a a radio system which covers the whole of County Durham and Darlington and just over the borders of our neighbouring Counties. This system operates from five hill top sites. All operational vehicles are fitted with radios to enable full mobile communication with our Control Room. The system is used to mobilise resources (appliances and officers) to incidents and for them to report back information.

We have 150 hand held short range (incident ground) radios that are used at the scene of an incident. These radios enable officers and crews to keep in contact with one another and, to control and monitor the incident as it progresses. Some of the radios are specially designed to be safely used in or near explosive substances such as certain chemicals or gases and are known as intrinsically safe radios.

We also have a Cross Band Repeater in our Incident Command Vehicle which enables the hand held radios to communicate with the Control Room via the main radio system.
